As the Second World War was ending in Europe, Winston Churchill ordered his military chiefs to plan an attack by British, American, Polish -- and German! -- troops that would free Poland from Russian occupation and drive the Red Army back to the 1939 border between Poland and the Soviet Union. Below is a page from the 'Operation Unthinkable' report.
Needless to say, the British Army was not enthusiastic, and President Harry Truman put the idea to rest. Perhaps as a warning to Prime Minister Chruchill, the report also included an annex about Britain's own vulnerability to an invasion by the Soviet Union:
