CAMCO personnel at Loiwing, China, probably at the factory opening
in 1939. Bill Pawley is standing in back, second from left.
Ed Pawley is third from right, and Gene Pawley may be
the man in the center of the photo; all three men are wearing white
shirt and tie. In khakis on the right is plant manager Chuck Hunter
of Curtiss-Wright. Heading the Chinese delegation is Wong Tsu,
fifth from left in black cutaway suit. In the 1920s he was Boeing's
first aeronautical engineer, before returning to China as aircraft
designer and aviation executive. (Hat tip to Bruce Gardner Leighton, who took the photo; to Eugenie
Buchan, who sent it along; and to Edward P. Pawley III, who identified
the brothers)
Roster of the Flying Tigers: attached
I may regret opening up this kettle of worms, but a few score
people worked closely with the Flying Tigers in Burma and China. Previously I've
listed the most obvious cases in the AVG roster. Now I've
separated them out and added CAMCO and other personnel. A tip of
the virtual hat to Zeke Striker for his contributions to this list,
which is still a work in progress. (Note that some of the Chinese-American
engine mechanics are shown as members of the AVG and also, by virtue
of their work for CAMCO in Rangoon, in this list as well.)
