CAF Flight SchoolIn additon to 100 men who signed on as fighter pilots, the AVG recruiters hired 10 army flight instructors for the CAF Flight School at Yunnan-yi, and one of the so-called fighter pilots also joined this group. In the spring of 1942, the flight school was closed down and the remaining check pilots joined the AVG combat squadrons. |

Ed Pawley is third from right, and Gene Pawley may be
the man in the center of the photo; all three men are wearing white
shirt and tie. In khakis on the right is plant manager Chuck Hunter
of Curtiss-Wright. Heading the Chinese delegation is Wong Tsu,
fifth from left in black cutaway suit. In the 1920s he was Boeing's
first aeronautical engineer, before returning to China as aircraft
designer and aviation executive. Fourth from left is the CNAC pilot
