MARTIN You in, Greenlaw? She steps behind him and runs a finger across his aback shoulder to shoulder. OLGA Next time. I've got to go be a good wife. She takes his hat off and hands it to him. A lock of blonde hair falls in her eye. Martin smoothes it behind her ear. She leans down and whispers. OLGA (CONT'D) Next time. CUT TO: INT. GREENLAW QUARTERS -- LATER Olga stands in a blue cotton dress. She picks up an elegant Chinese beaded purse and puts it on--the strap diagonally across her body--then admires how it looks with her dress. She smoothes her hair back and begins to pin it into a bun. She stops, lets a blonde lock fall, then smoothes it behind her ear. She sizes up the look in the mirror with a smile, then frowns. She scoops her hair back up again, twists it and starts pushing pins in. Behind her, out a window, men run across the walkways. She sees them in her mirror. She steps to the window. \ANGLE ON MEN RUNNING OUTSIDE THE QUARTERS OLGA What on earth? CUT TO: INT. RADIO SHACK-- MOMENTS LATER Olga opens the swinging doors and steps inside. The men are dressing and scurrying about. The TECHNICIANS chirp information furiously. OLGA What's going on? MARTIN You better get to one of the shelters. OLGA Shelter? With that the siren goes off all over the base. Olga covers her ears. Martin pushes past her. Older slides by attaching his suspenders. OLDER Goddamn drills. This is getting ridiculous already. Smith and Green trot by. GREEN I dunno, Charlie, the radio got a report of Japs 30 minutes away. The men swarm around Olga getting themselves together. She looks bewildered. The radio operators are feverishly looking at coordinates on maps and analyzing messages. Green stops by the poker table to swoop up his chips. He hands them to Olga. OLGA What are these for? GREEN In case I don't come back. He winks and Olga smiles. She stuffs the chips into her purse. Martin swiftly moves past her again. OLGA Neil! He stops. She reaches out for him and embraces him kissing him on the cheek. OLGA (CONT'D) For good luck. He embraces her back, smoothes a bit of hair behind her ear and heads off. OLGA (CONT'D) I'll see you in, what? An hour or so? MARTIN Nah, these Japs will be running with their yellow tails tucked between their wings in about...half an hour. Martin skips off, donning his helmet. Greenlaw bursts into the room. He sees Olga and grabs her by the shoulders. GREENLAW You must go home!! Olga is taken off guard by his tone and retaliates. OLGA I've wanted to go home for nearly a year! GREENLAW (to a private) Take her back to our quarters. OLGA (shaking herself from her husband) Get off me. I'll go by myself. She storms out of the doors. EXT. AERODROME -- CONTINUOUS Outside, the bustle of excitement continues. Greenlaw follows her, but is met by MEN CARRYING MAPS. She jogs away from him. In the distance, the airstrip is coming alive. She continues across the courtyard to the AIRSTRIP MECHANICS are kicking wheel blocks from under the planes. Pilots are suiting up and leaping into cockpits. One plane travels slowly to the runway as Older runs beside it waving his .45 OLDER That's my plane you bastard!! Olga stands, mouth agape, fascinated by the action. R.T. Smith darts past her. OLGA What excitement! SMITH (sternly) Get to shelter, Mrs. Greenlaw. Olga's expression falls off her face. The air kicks up from the planes. They take off one by one. She holds her hair out of her eyes, glances around, then starts to step backward toward the radio shack. She sees Martin's plane--painted with a shark bearing its teeth. He jumps into his cockpit. She waves to him. He notices and pauses before strapping himself in. Suddenly, a low flying plane with a red dot on the side speeds by. As it races off, a thunderous EXPLOSION rattles the whole base. Olga is thrown to the ground on her hands and knees. The poker chips are hurled from her purse onto the ground. She picks up a handful, sees the scrapes on her hands and hauls herself to her feet. An AIRMAN swoops by and helps her to her feet. OLGA I'm OK! I'm OK! She runs with him as he leads her. She peels off to the radio shack. AIRMAN This way! There is a shelter this way! OLGA I must find my husband! She bolts for the radio shack as another bomb EXPLODES in the distance. The man shakes his head and takes off.
